Have you ever been to the Fens?

Do you want to visit charming English villages?

Can you imagine being the skipper of a narrowboat?

Our canal boat hire base can be found in the Fenland Waterways, on the Middle Level, between the River Ouse and River Nene. Our friendly, family business has been here for generations, offering you our many years of experience, and a warm welcome, from the descendants of boat builder, Charlie Fox.

These waterways in the east of England, are a unique network of navigable rivers dotted with wildlife, pubs and history, and are perfect for exploring by boat. Popular holiday routes are March to Ely, Ely to Cambridge, March to Peterborough and Peterborough to Fotheringhay. Our blog is packed with photos and suggested restaurants and pubs, historic sights, and things to do. These unusual waterways make it possible to cruise from March to Northampton via Peterborough. In the other direction; a boater could travel from March to Ely and Cambridge. The journeys include quaint English villages and towns, scenic countryside and dramatically photogenic Fenland skies and windmills.

Locks and Lock Keys

In Cambridge, the furthest you can travel in the summer is to Jesus Green Lock, because the Cambridge Backs are busy with small unpowered craft, (called punts). Hiring a punt you can see some of Cambridge’s most famous bridges and buildings, such as the Bridge of Sighs, and King’s College Chapel. Jesus Green and Midsummer Common are perfect green spaces to moor up a narrowboat for a picnic, and then explore Cambridge on foot. Baits Bite Lock is currently closed (November 2024) so there is no access to Cambridge until at least the next boating season (2025). It is however possible to hop on a train from Ely or Waterbeach

Notable points on the Fenland Waterways

Salters Lode lock, Denver Lock and Denver Sluice are notable points on the Fenland Waterways. The tidal Great Ouse means navigation is different to an ordinary manual lock and you’ll need to call ahead to check the locking times. If you’re used to boating in other parts of the UK you will find a normal windlass doesn’t work very well around here! An Abloy key, (provided) unlocks the control panels on the Nene and Ouse locks. The Middle Level Yale key provides access to the unmanned locks at Ashline and Lode End, and to the facilities block in March. There is also a special windlass on the middle level (confusingly called an Ouse key) that operates the slackers (paddles) at Ashline and Marmont Priory.

Historic Landmarks

Your holiday route may take you to Ely Cathedral, Peterborough Cathedral, and several unusual museums, including the Stained Glass Museum in Ely, and Oliver Cromwell’s house. Houghton Mill, is a working watermill that sells flour to visitors at weekends. Stretham Engine is a 19th century steam powered pumping station, once used to drain the Fens. The Nene Valley Heritage Railway can be visited from the Environment Agency moorings at Wansford Station. You won’t have time to see all of these in one holiday!

Food and Drink

Of course, a narrowboat holiday isn’t complete without exploring traditional pubs and enjoying riverside dining. If you make it as far as Cambridge, visit the oldest pub on the River Cam, The Fort St George. This authentic British pub dates back to the 16th century and contains oak beams, large windows, and an Inglenook fireplace for cosy evenings, plus plenty of comfy furniture so you can soak in the view of the River Cam. The Moorings Restaurant at the Crown Lodge Hotel in Outwell is just a short walk from Outwell Boat Basin. The Cutter Inn is a smart pub and restaurant located on the river Great Ouse in the heart of Ely, with river views. (Search for more food and drink options on our interactive canal map.)

Narrowboating in the Fens is also great for spotting local wildlife like swans, herons, and sometimes even kingfishers along the canals.

To be honest, exploring Cambridgeshire’s unique waterways by canal boat offers an unforgettable blend of scenic beauty, rich history, and local charm. From navigating the locks and discovering quaint towns, to visiting historic landmarks and enjoying traditional riverside pubs, each journey promises a relaxed pace and a deeper connection with the local heritage. Whether you’re cruising past the impressive towers of Ely Cathedral, watching kingfishers dart along the water’s edge, or enjoying a pint at a centuries-old pub in Cambridge, the Fenland Waterways invite you to experience the heart of East Anglia from a new perspective.

Nav Data | March to St Ives Bridge: 52 miles, 6 locks, 15hrs cruising

As the days shorten and Autumn approaches, you may want to consider a 7 – 10 day cruise for the perfect escape.

You could choose to visit the Lodes and travel up to visit the stunning nature Reserve at Wicken Fen.

wicken fen visitors centre – credit: fox narrowboats

However, why not branch off from the main route, West onto the Great Ouse for a leisurely journey of 19 miles and with only two locks to negotiate, from Pope’s Corner to St. Ives.

Popes Corner

See our waterways map for full route information

From Pope’s Corner, bearing right towards Earith, you will find yourself joining a section of the Ouse known as the Old West River, a curious name for a river which flows eastwards.

On route, look out for Stretham Old Engine, a restored land drainage pumping station open to the public on certain days.

A great stop for refreshments is The Crown Pub in Earith.

Although mooring is currently not available here, you can take advantage of a 48 hour free public mooring on the frontage at nearby West View Marina.

St Ives

St Ives, (not to be confused with its Cornish counterpart), is famed for its 15th century chapel bridge, one of only four in England. St Ives has also historically been the home of some of the biggest markets in the country, with its Monday market still a central feature of the town centre.

St Ives Lock introduces two features, it is interesting to explore if you aren’t familiar with them.

Firstly, it is fitted with a guillotine bottom gate if you haven’t been on the Nene this could be your first self operated guillotine – now electric and operated by EA key which reduces the possibility of hand injuries. At the top there are conventional mitre gates. Secondly the lock chamber is an irregular shape, having been widened on one side for part of its length to increase the number of boats that can fit.

At busy times it’s common for a selection of cruisers, narrowboats other small craft and the odd widebeam to find themselves sharing the space.

St Ives’ most unusual historic building is a delight to see – the chapel that stands on the middle of the partly Mediaeval town bridge. There are just four bridges in the country that share this feature (the others being at Bradford-on-Avon, Rotherham and Wakefield), with st Ives being the only one you can cruise through. The building has also at other times been a doctor’s surgery, a toll-house, an inn and even a brothel.

St Ives Chapel Jo Edkins (inside) Rob Noble CC-BY-SA-2.0

But there’s much more to St Ives, with its attractive riverfront, intriguing museum, historic parish church (which had the misfortune to lose its spire to a direct impact from a WW1 aeroplane in 1918) and useful shops, pubs and restaurants. The Norris Museum is a small but fascinating free museum unveils the story of Huntingdonshire from ancient times onwards, covering social history, personalities, wartime experiences, archaeology, science and technology, art, costume and transport. See the Norris Museum facebook page for upcoming events in September.

A great place to linger although if you’ve made good time, you can always consider cruising on a further 11 miles to Huntingdon.

Fox Narrowboat Holiday

To visit St Ives you can take a Fox Narrowboat holiday from March. We suggest 10 nights or more to take in a good number of sights and comfortable cruising time.

Do you enjoy spending time exploring England’s rich heritage and visiting places that evoke a nostalgic charm? Isn’t it wonderful when an ancient building sparks your imagination, transporting you back to a distant past? Here are just some of the historical gems you can visit on a canal boat holiday in Cambridgeshire.

Houghton Mill

Houghton Mill is a National Trust property on the River Great Ouse. Centred on an island on the river, this large timber-built watermill still has operational machinery. Flour is still milled and sold to visitors at the weekends.

Stretham Engine

Five miles south of Ely on the Old West River is the sole surviving operational steam engine in the Black Fen. It was installed in 1831, replacing four wind pumps. This steam-powered pumping station was used to drain the Fens in the 19th and early 20th centuries. It is open to the public on selected Sundays between April and October, 1:00pm to 5:00pm.

Peterborough Cathedral

This cathedral was rebuilt in the 12th century, and has remained mostly intact. It is the burial place of Henry VIII’s first wife, Catherine of Aragon. On the approach to Peterborough by narrowboat, the cathedral can be clearly seen across the flat fields that lead to Stanground Lock.

The Nene Valley Railway

This historic railway can be visited from the Environment Agency moorings at Wansford Station. From here you can take a trip aboard a heritage steam or diesel train. This can be included as part of a narrowboat cruise towards Peterborough. Read: The Canal Boat Holiday That Train Enthusiasts Will Love.

Ely Cathedral

This cathedral is known as the ‘ship of the Fens’ because it is visible from miles away as you approach it. Enjoy the cathedral shops, and a cathedral tour, including access to the unique Octagon Tower and the Monastic Buildings around the cathedral grounds. While you are there you can also visit the Stained Glass Museum.

Oliver Cromwell’s House

Also in Ely you can see Oliver Cromwell’s House, which is now a museum. There’s so much to see in Ely it’s worth stopping overnight. If you’re visiting Ely by narrowboat the city centre is just a short walk away from the moorings, up a steep hill.

Museums

Cambridgeshire’s local museums are often low-cost or free. Wherever you travel by narrowboat you are likely to come across one. There is one in March, Whittlesey, one in Peterborough, and one in Ely. The more unusual ones are Oliver Cromwell’s House, and The Stained Glass Museum. Prickwillow Museum tells the story of the drainage of the Fens, the history of the local area, and showcases restored diesel engines.

Cambridge

One of the most popular destinations for foreign tourists visiting the UK, this ‘city of perspiring dreams’; is a world famous university city. Cambridge is good for shopping, restaurants, and getting cosy in ancient English pubs. Try punting on the river, stroll around some of the 31 colleges looking at impressive architecture, and wander among the bicycles and students.

Cruising Through History

Among these eight suggestions you will find quirkiness, famous sights, nostalgia, heritage and heaps of British charm. What could be more quintessentially English than visiting these ancient places by narrowboat?

Is there anymore a relaxing and restorative holiday than on a narrowboat?

Is there any better way to immerse yourself in the natural world?

I’m that person with the lifestyle many of you envy. I’m semi-retired and live on a Fox narrowboat! So what does the person whose life can appear ‘one long holiday’ do for a holiday? I often stock up on provisions and cruise the tributaries of the River Great Ouse, the rivers Lark, Little Ouse and Wissey.

The days of traffic jams, congestion charging, ‘held up by roadworks’ and road rage are but a distant memory to me ! I never go anywhere fast in my boat, and occasionally marvel at the small minority of hirers who appear to feel the need to go as fast as possible, seemingly in an attempt to achieve the maximum possible mileage. My mantra is “if I was in a hurry I shouldn’t have bought a boat”. My formula for stress free living – relax and drink in the narrowboat experience.

On the river Lark visit the brilliant Prickwillow Drainage Museum Open mainly Saturdays, Sundays & Mondays, April through September.

And explore upstream as far as Judes Ferry and reward yourself with good pub grub in the hostelry! It is a long standing boating tradition that you can’t turn around outside a pub without first sampling its wares. (Perhaps a less well known tradition, but one I strive to try and keep alive!)

The entrance to the Little Ouse is marked by The Ship at Brandon Creek PH. With both pub and EA visitor moorings the Ship also has a long tradition of feeding and watering the hungry boater.

The last of these three tributaries is the River Wissey. The lower reaches feel so remote as you squeeze through its tight reeds that it often reminds me of the film classic, the ‘African Queen’. My wife plays Katherine Hepburn to my Humphrey Bogart !

Marvel at the alien landscape as you briefly pass next to the country’s largest beet factory at Wissington. Both the Wissey and the Little Ouse feature strange water management feature.

The Head of Navigation on the Wissey is a charming flint built Suffolk town called Brandon. 5 miles north east of Brandon is Grime’s Graves, the only Neolithic flint mine open to visitors in Britain. Both worth visiting !

In this blog I’ve only scratched the surface of the many interesting features and quirks of these rivers. In my printed 260 page guide “The Great Ouse and its Tributaries’ published by Imray. I describe, for example, both how the river Lark demonstrates all the different historical stages in pumping the Fens dry, and how the same river was used for mass, total immersion baptism, right up until the 1970s, only stopping after complaints that the recently ‘dunked’ were too smelly! And many, many other strange and little known facts. The guide is available from Fox’s. Chris Howes.

One of the best ways to enjoy the great British countryside is to explore the labyrinth of canals and waterways by narrowboat. And while you are pootling up and down the network, you may wish to stop off at one of the country’s fine canal museums to learn more about the waterways and their function during the Industrial Revolution.

The UK’s canal system played a major role in shaping the country we now call home. The museums we will mention below pay homage to narrowboats and the waterways and provide an interesting and educational insight into their importance.

Gloucester Waterways Museum

Housed in a Grade II-listed warehouse at the heart of Gloucester’s dock is the Gloucester Waterways Museum. The museum is home to several displays that highlight the importance of the local canals with regard to commerce and the positive effect the canals had on the local wildlife.

The Move It! Display focuses on the ingenious engineering involved in the canals and the narrowboats which sailed upon them. Featuring intricate models, hands-on displays, and real working engines, this is a great way to get the children interested in history, as they will have the chance to race boats and operate a lock.

The Living Havens display teaches about how the canal systems benefited local wildlife, providing havens for birdlife, insects, plants, and fish. There’s a short film to enjoy, which highlights things to look out for when you head back to your narrowboat or the next time you take a walk alongside the canals.

www.gloucesterwaterwaysmuseum.org.uk

National Waterways Museum

Located at the convergence of the Shropshire Union Canal, the Manchester Ship Canal, and the River Mersey, the National Waterways Museum is a great place to learn about the lives and work of yesteryear’s canal workers.

In its heyday, Ellesmere Port was the largest inland waterway dock in the UK, and it played a major role in transporting goods from the ocean-faring vessels coming into Liverpool.

Explore the Porters Row cottages, which were built in 1833, and the blacksmith’s forge, where the canal company’s ironwork used to be made. The Power Hall is home to an array of historical engines, and the Pump House showcases the steam-powered engines that provided power to the hydraulic cranes used to unload the boats.

National Waterways Museum website

Canal Museum at Stoke Bruerne

This was the country’s first canal museum, telling the story of Britain’s canals and the people who lived and worked on them. The museum educates about the engineering feats and challenges that were overcome in the building of the canals and the role the canals played in the Industrial Revolution.

After exploring the museum, you can meet the resident blacksmith or take a stroll along the Woodland Walk. You can also enjoy a boat ride along the canal, and once you are tired and hungry from enjoying the exhibits, you can enjoy some superb pub grub at one of the two pubs.

https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/places-to-visit/stoke-bruerne

The Black Country Living Museum

The Black Country, to the west of Birmingham, played a huge part in the Industrial Revolution. The name of this region is believed to have originated due to the presence of coal fields in the area.

The Black Country Living Museum, near Dudley, tells the story of the region’s importance in the expansion of commerce at the time.

With 26 acres of reconstructed shops, pubs, and houses to explore, the Black Country Living Museum really brings the history to life. The museum showcases over 80,000 items in its collections, including buildings, cars, trolley buses, and photographs. There are also shops, locks, and canal boats to explore.

The museum sits on a working section of the canal, and you can arrive by narrowboat. There are a limited number of 48-hour moorings available to visitors, and they are available free of charge on a first-come, first-served basis.

As the nights begin to draw in and Christmas music begins to ring out around the country, you may be planning Christmas activites with the family. Here are 3 family-friendly Christmas attractions close to our waterways and activities you can visit during the 2022 / 2023 festive season.

Meet Father Christmas at Wicken Fen Nature Reserve

The National Trust-run Wicken Fen Nature Reserve sits alongside Burwell Lode, and they have a few Christmas activities planned over the festive period. The reserve is the National Trust’s oldest nature reserve and is situated in England’s most famous fen.

Father and Mother Christmas will be visiting the reserve in the lead-up to Christmas, and you can bring the kids to meet them in the Fen Cottage. While waiting to meet Father and Mother Christmas, the kids can then join the elves for a Christmas decoration workshop.

The Wicken Fen Festive Woodland Trail is also open from the 26th of November, and you can enjoy a wander through the fen on a raised boardwalk. It’s the perfect way to get some family exercise in the great outdoors if you have already started tucking into the mince pies…

Visit National Trust website for more info

Winter Lights at Anglesey Abbey

Anglesey Abbey is thought to have been founded by Henry I in 1135, and it then served as a priory from the early 13th century until Henry VIII dissolved the monasteries. In 1596, Anglesey Abbey was bought by the Fowkes family, who converted the remains of the priory into a house in 1609.

During December, the ground floor of the house will be fully dressed for Christmas and open for the public to enjoy, with the highlight being the tree in the Tapestry Hall.

Remember, remember,
The Fifth of November,
Gunpowder treason and plot;
For I see no reason
Why Gunpowder Treason
Should ever be forgot.

As Bonfire Night approaches we plan fireworks and buy toffee apples, but don’t always remember that we are also commemorating the failure of the plot to assassinate King James VI. Some of that plotting was done not far from Fox Narrowboats marina, at a Jacobean 17th century manor house.

Wadenhoe House was once home to the Delacy family who were found to be involved in the Gunpowder Plot, and the house was one of the meeting places for the Plot planning. (ref. NB No Problem blog.) The beautiful house is now a hotel and wedding venue, and the village is well worth a visit for its attractive stone buildings, thatched rooves, charming old post office, church and traditional pub.

The good news is, you can get there by boat! A canal boat journey to Wadenhoe from our hire boat base will take around three days. The trip takes you at a leisurely pace along the Old River Nene, through the Middle Levels and onto the River Nene. On the journey you will see beautiful lock surroundings and ancient mills.

When you arrive at Wadenhoe there are moorings at the historic King’s Head, and there is a water point next to the pub which is accessible with a River Nene Lock Key.

This 17th century thatched inn has been serving food and drink for over 400 years, so perhaps it was built not long after the Gunpowder Plot was made? In the summertime you can sit outside and watch other narrowboats pass through the lock. They charge a mooring fee if you do not use the pub. Just let them know if you are planning to stay overnight.

There are also free moorings a little further upstream against the Site of Special Scientific Interest, which is in easy reach of the pub.

The 13th century church; The Church of St. Michael and All Angels is on a hill overlooking the meadowlands of the Nene valley, and is isolated from the main part of the village, which lies below along the River Nene.

If you enjoy walking, The Nene Way long distance footpath passes through Wadenhoe and the circular walk between the villages of Wadenhoe and Aldwincle take in many sites of interest. A handy guide book, called ‘A Walk Around Wadenhoe’ can be downloaded from the history group website. Most of the village is made up of 17th, 18th and 19th century attractive limestone buildings with roofs mainly of Collyweston slate tiles, pan tiles and a few with thatch.

If you take a bus to Peterborough from Wadenhoe, you can have a day out in the city to visit the shops and cathedral. Alternatively you can carry on towards Peterborough by boat. On a narrowboat holiday in this area you can visit the historic market town of Whittlesey on the way to Wadenhoe. Then in Peterborough you can go through Nene Park, and moor at Ferry Meadows Country Park.

The River Nene connects the east of England to the rest of the UK waterway network. If you’re looking for a less-crowded narrowboat holiday where you can enjoy stunning countryside and attractive villages, The Nene is a great location.

So next year, why not take a narrowboat to Wadenhoe, and wander the same ancient streets and English lanes that were once trodden by Robert Catesby, Guy Fawkes and the other conspirators?

For a cruise to Wadenhoe you may like to book a week long boating holiday with Fox Narrowboats. Check availability here

What are you like at sticking to New Year’s resolutions? Does goal setting make you feel disheartened? Does the thought of optimistic pledges and promises just make you groan?

#houghtonmill #wickenfen #strethamengine #fenswildlife #nenevalleyrailway

A more cheerful way to start the year is by creating a ‘bucket list’ of fun things to do.

A bucket list is traditionally a list of things to do before you kick the proverbial bucket, but after enduring two years of coronavirus restrictions, we thought that now is a good time to plan a few things to look forward to. Here are our best suggestions for fun things you can do while narrowboating in the Fens.

Learn to work a lock and steer a boat. Locks are easy to operate and at Fox Narrowboats we have qualified instructors that will give you full training during the boat handover. If you’re wondering if it’s difficult to learn the ropes read: What’s it Like to Actually Steer a Narrowboat?

Visit ‘Mother’, a thatched structure at Wicken Fen by Studio Morison. The nature reserve here is a favourite with our customers. This art installation is inspired by the restorative qualities of the beautiful fen landscape as described in Richard Mabey’s book ‘Nature Cure’. It is a sculptural structure, and also a pavilion, that you can sit inside, and contemplate nature. Read: How to Get Top Author’s ‘Nature Cure’ on a Narrowboat Holiday

Visit Houghton Mill, a National Trust property on the River Great Ouse. Centred on an island on the Great Ouse at Houghton, stands Houghton Mill a large timber-built watermill with operational machinery. The Mill is open to the public at weekends, and flour is still milled and sold to visitors.

Visit Stretham Engine, five miles south of Ely on the Old West River. It is the sole surviving operational steam engine in the Black Fen. It was installed in 1831, replacing four wind pumps. The engine has limited opening times in the summer months. This steam-powered pumping station was used to drain the Fens in the 19th and early 20th centuries. https://strethamoldengine.org.uk

Spot wildlife, like the great crested grebe and the occasional kingfisher. On a riverside walk, or in our local nature reserves, you may see dragonflies, damselflies, otters or water voles. Read: 3 Ways to See More Fenland Wildlife

Try punting on ‘The Backs’ in Cambridge. The River Cam navigation for powered craft ends at Jesus Green Lock, but above the lock Scudamore’s offer a wide range of tour and self-hire punting options. Punting is a traditional Cambridge pastime; see famous landmarks like the Bridge of Sighs, while floating down the river. Read: Three Amazing Things to Do in Cambridge

The Nene Valley Railway can be visited from the Environment Agency moorings at Wansford Station. From here you can take a trip aboard a heritage steam or diesel train. This can be planned as part of a narrowboat cruise towards Peterborough. Read: The Canal Boat Holiday That Train Enthusiasts Will Love.

Treat yourself to a meal at a riverside pub. The Swan on the River at Littleport may be recognised as the finishing point for the 2021 Oxford Cambridge boat race. Read: Three Waterside Pubs to Visit.

Cruise over an aqueduct. Mullicourt aqueduct carries Well Creek over the Middle Level main drain.

Take a photo of St Ives Bridge; a 15th century bridge crossing the River Great Ouse in St Ives. It is one of only four bridges in England to incorporate a chapel. Other photo opportunities on the waterways include wide skies at sunsets and sunrise with silhouettes of wind farms against the horizon.

And finally, moor up in the middle of nowhere, such as a quiet mooring at Benwick on the Middle Level navigation, (this village is a hidden gem). Read: Six Stunning Moorings on the Middle Level.

Plan Ahead

The New Year can often put us in the mood for planning ahead, so why not give yourself something to look forward to and organise this year’s narrowboat holiday? Booking in advance can mean better availability, and with Fox Narrowboats you’re more likely to get the boat of your choice. It’s also easier to get time off work on your intended dates if you plan well ahead.

What’s on your narrowboating New Year’s Bucket List? Let us know on Facebook.

Traditionally Christmas is a time for carols and choirs, candle-lit services, holly and ivy, decorated trees, and children’s nativity plays. So it’s a popular time to visit your local church, or even a cathedral if you live near to one. We are lucky enough to be based between two stunning and historically significant cathedrals.

Peterborough Cathedral

This Christmas Peterborough Cathedral is offering concerts, with choirs and brass, carol services, a candlelight tour, a Christingle Service, and a theatre production of Charles Dickens’ ‘A Christmas Carol’ as well as the usual Christmas Eve and Christmas Day services.

Peterborough Cathedral was rebuilt in the 12th century, and like Durham and Ely Cathedrals it has remained largely intact. It is the burial place of Henry VIII’s first wife, Catherine of Aragon.

To get to Peterborough by narrowboat from our Fox Narrowboats hire base is a 12 hour return trip, which is ideal for a short break. On the approach to Peterborough the cathedral can be clearly seen across the flat fields that lead to Stanground Lock. There are visitor moorings on the River Nene along the length of a park which are convenient for the city centre. (Read more about this cruise: March to Ferry Meadows Country Park.)

If you visit Peterborough on your narrowboat holiday next year you can check out what events are on at the cathedral while you are in the area by looking at the website: Peterborough Cathedral

Alternatively, turning left from our marina you will shortly come to the Fenland market town of March where you will find free visitor boating moorings on either side of the town bridge. March to Ely is about 18 cruising hours return trip. (Read more about this cruise: March to Ely narrowboat holiday.)

Ely Cathedral

This cathedral is known as the ‘ship of the Fens’ because it is visible from miles away as you approach it. This Advent and Christmas Ely Cathedral is offering Christmas services and concerts with the Cathedral Choir, and various family-themed activities. There is also seasonal shopping in the cathedral shops, homemade festive food in the Almonry, guided tower tours up the Octagon Tower or West Tower, and a spectacular 30ft Christmas tree.

But you don’t have to visit at Christmas to enjoy a cathedral tour, including access to the unique Octagon Tower and the Monastic Buildings around the cathedral grounds. While you are there you can also visit the Stained Glass Museum. Also in Ely you can see Oliver Cromwell’s House, which is now a museum, the Ely Museum at the Old Gaol, and the antiques centre close to the river. There’s so much to see here it’s worth stopping overnight. If you’re visiting Ely by narrowboat the city centre is just a short walk away from the moorings, up a steep hill.

Cambridge

Although Cambridge is famous for being a university city, it does not actually have its own cathedral. However, there are plenty of historic churches to appreciate when you visit. Cambridge falls within the Diocese of Ely (Church of England) and is associated with Ely Cathedral. Many of the churches in the city are affiliated with university colleges, having strong historical connections. All Saints’ Church is a beautiful Victorian Grade-II listed structure. Our Lady and the English Martyrs has late 19th century, neo-Gothic architecture, a tall spire, wonderful stained-glass windows and many historic elements. Great St Mary’s Church is near the Visitor Information Centre on Peas Hill, and dates from the late-15th century. Discover the 18th-century galleries and a tall bell tower, which can be climbed to see panoramic views of the city centre. There are many more noteworthy churches and colleges to wander around during your visit to Cambridge, and the journey there by narrowboat is beautiful.

From Ely to Cambridge is about five hours cruise each way. Read more about this narrowboat cruise: Ely to Cambridge.

Christmas in England is a chance to appreciate Gothic churches, choirs, and bustling markets in ancient towns.
