Our narrowboat hire base is less than 100 miles from London, and is easy to get to by train from King’s Cross in about 90 minutes. For a mates’ holiday in south east England, choose from our four most popular, stunning canal routes, and a range of comfortable canal boats to hire.

Narrowboat holidays in Cambridgeshire are ideal for beginners, because your trip begins with our in-house training, included in the price. Our boats can accommodate up to six people and have multiple berths and fully equipped galleys. Your route can include picturesque scenery, wide open Fenland skies, canal-side pubs, and charming, ancient market towns. Far less crowded than the Norfolk Broads, our local waterways have very few locks, which makes them faster and easier to navigate than most UK canals, although fast travel is not what narrowboaters are aiming for.

You may be surprised how easy it is to steer a narrowboat, so that handling the boat quickly becomes part of the pleasure. Imagine relaxed mornings on deck with a coffee, or stargazing and chatting together with a glass of wine in the evenings.

Tips for Friendship Groups

Each day, it’s a good idea to agree together on where you might want to stop, based on how many hours you want to travel that day. It’s best to enjoy a slow cruise rather than aim to get too far too soon. Plan ahead using the guidebook provided on board, CanalPlanAC, or our own interactive waterways map. It really is more about the journey than the destination. Make sure to plan your return journey back to the hire base too.

Everybody can take turns steering the boat and operating the locks, as this is all part of the fun, so make sure to pay attention during the boat handling training. Before you begin, you may like to plan a few meals and snacks that are easy to make on board in a small space.

As you travel, make use of public toilets and toilets in pubs wherever you can, because the toilet tank on board may fill quickly with a larger group on the boat.

A typical day together as a group may include sharing the steering duties, operating locks, and mooring up. Stopping places may be a scenic rural picnic, a village fish and chip shop, or a day exploring a historic town like Ely or Peterborough. There should be something for everyone, if your group has various interests.

What to Bring

Bring soft bags rather than hard suitcases, as they will be easier to store on board, and don’t bring too many things. Space is limited. You can’t store anything on the roof of a boat because low bridges and branches may knock it off into the water.

Pack layers of clothing to prepare for varying temperatures, and be ready for rain or shine. You may like to bring some gloves for rainy days, because if you’re the one out on deck steering, that hand on the tiller can get cold. Hopefully a shipmate will bring you a warm cuppa.

Before you set off, get some basic grocery shopping on board. You won’t always be moored near a shop, and you may decide to moor somewhere scenic and remote for an unscheduled tea break. So make sure you have milk and biscuits on board, plus coffee, tea and bread. Keep some snacks on board too, and something easy to cook on the hob.

Fox Narrowboats can arrange a supermarket delivery to your boat at the marina in March before you set off. If you’re celebrating an occasion and fancy a treat, order an afternoon tea or a graze box from Glam Grazing. Although there is only a small freezer compartment on board, our boats come with fully equipped galleys, including crockery, cutlery, oven, hob, microwave and fridge.

Locks

There are no famous lock flights on the Fenland waterways. The Fens are reclaimed, drained marshland, which makes it a mostly flat landscape. For example, there are only two locks between March Marina and Peterborough.

Get some crew on the lock landing as you approach a lock gate, and ask them to open it before the steerer guides the boat into the lock. Don’t nudge the gate open with the bow of the boat. Get the skipper to watch the stern and keep it clear of the cill when travelling downhill. If a boat gets caught on the cill, it can sink.

When passing through a lock, or mooring up, dogs should be kept inside the boat or on a lead. Let us know at the time of booking if you want to bring a dog.

Going slow is what boating is all about, so if you can walk faster than your boat, you’re doing it right. Unplug from 21st-century living and look out for daffodils and primroses along the riverbanks. At this time of year you may see blossom on the trees, windmills in the fields, and ducklings and cygnets bobbing along on the water.

If you’re on board at Eastertime, stock up on chocolate eggs and hot cross buns. Visit local markets and Easter events by narrowboat, and enjoy St George’s Fayre in March Town Centre, or check out the world eel throwing competition at Ely Eel Festival in May. The weather has been cold and yet after a short but bracing cruise this afternoon as I write, the most beautiful bands of sunlight are pouring themselves in through my windows, dancing tantalising reflections across my ceiling—a sight unseen when blocked in by other boats. I am in awe. I am content. I am lost in the simple pleasures of boating, of movement, and of changing seasons.

There are also sounds that cannot be expressed through pictures: the haunting lone call of a moorhen, the delightful tumbling song of hedgerow birds, the nasally honking of geese, the gentle slow wingbeats that belie a swan’s size. And then there is my thudding heart; bursting with happiness for the springtime that I know will now unfold at double speed before me.

I am here. I am within it. I am glad.

But alas, this year personal commitments mean we can’t venture too far and that’s okay because after many spells afloat throughout these past 16 years, and having travelled much of the network, I know that whatever stretch we find ourselves on, there will still be magic:

As the season progresses I know I will feel myself steadily thawing, my mind drifting to the promise of local cruises in dappled sunlight, working locks in the still silence of lighter evenings.

I think you’ll agree that a season of round-the-clock fires, condensation-laden windows, and just that general sense of having being inside for longer, can leave our boats—and ourselves—a little uninspired so as soon as the weather takes a turn toward the light, I like to have a really good spring clean.

By the end of winter wood ash and coal dust seem to have found their way into every crevice, which means it’s time to fling open the doors, grab a bucket of soapy water and a sponge and set to work on cleaning every wall, window, shelf and cupboard. I also like to wash any fabrics, curtains and cushion covers. Thoroughly clearing out the winter grime feels so good and also offers an opportunity to de-clutter alongside, which frees the mind ready for this season that brings with it new hopes and dreams to be realised.

Exploring Cambridgeshire’s Wildlife: Spotting Flora and Fauna with Fox Narrowboats

Making space for new light foods such as uplifting herbal teas and self raising flour for lemon-infused cakes is a good way to move away from the cocoa and spelt flour that kept us full and warm during winter. Go ahead and add inspiring books to your bookshelf too by re-distributing old reads to new homes, and be sure to dig out your waterway map books so you can get to planning some adventures for the coming year. In my opinion there’s nothing like pouring over physical maps to get the excitement bubbling!

With so much to see on the British Waterways in spring, from the first buds and bulbs bursting out, to ducklings and signets and (hopefully!) equally cheery faces on maiden cruises, if you’ve been tucked up in a winter mooring it’s important to untie the ropes and head off exploring. Plus, there’s nothing like the thought of your first stroll down the towpath—or cruise on the back of your boat—in a t-shirt, to motivate that first move following a cocooned winter.

Which brings me to the last—but by no means least—important chore of spring cleaning: the exterior. It can be easy in winter to let the leaves, dirt and chimney dust clog up your roof, not to mention the odd bag of coal chucked up on a cold, dark night or a length of wood gathered on a dog walk and stored only to be forgotten. Having a clear up and then washing and polishing your paintwork will give everything a final lift. You can buy a boat washing shampoo, as well as polish, from any good boat chandlery and a simple vinegar spray will do the trick to sparkle up your windows. If you have canopies, a good brush down and wash using whatever the manufacturers suggest will ensure your narrowboat is spring-ready and with the final touch of a bunch of daffodils, you’re good to go and enjoy this new season!

Over the years, we’ve received messages, reviews and emails that read less like feedback and more like love letters. Not just to Fox Narrowboats, but to the boats themselves, the waterways, and the feeling of a slower pace of life.

Having now lived on narrowboats for many years I can concur that carrying coal and bags of laundry down a muddy towpath can certainly lose some of its ‘being joyfully connected to the elements’ charm after several months. Certainly there have been many winters where I have pondered if there is space to fit a washing machine on my boat. However, being present to the first precious gifts of spring does indeed more than make up for any of those hardships and failed daydreams.

Just yesterday morning I woke to dry windows inside, blue sky outside and felt the first  faint but euphoric realisation that somewhere in the not too far distance, spring is brewing. It made me reminisce about early spring 2011—one of my first on a narrowboat—when I lounged on the roof writing whilst chatting to passing boaters, my daughter peddling up and down the towpath on her bike talking to the ducks and geese. In that moment I simply couldn’t imagine a better way to live in England because for me, it was everything at its best: nature, friendliness and freedom.

In the first throws of spring, winter quickly becomes a distant memory. My dreams of an on-board washing machine fade into the background as hand-washed clothes blow in the breeze and there is abundant space on the doorstep where we can roam and find adventures along secret paths, in wide open fields and amongst the trees. I think that’s it for me, that on a narrowboat we can live right in the heart of an unfurling spring. Each morning the air tastes fresher and I feel more at peace as I lay still listening to a visiting chaffinch or watch moorhens as they scurry in and out of their nest. The world comes alive all around me and somehow, the quiet cocoon that winter can be, makes me even more aware of each minuscule change.

And when I do have to do a laundrette run, I know it will no longer be plagued by a cold, muddy walk to sit looking sorrowfully out through steamed-up windows onto a dreary street. Instead us ‘washers’ will chat to each other with bright smiles as we watch our clothes go round and I will be reminded of the valuable people connection that would be lost if I were to relent to having a washing machine on my boat.

All our boats are winterised and tucked up to sleep until spring-time, while we retreat indoors with mince pies and hot drinks.

But while our narrowboats are resting and the towpaths sparkle with morning frost, this season can be the perfect moment to dream ahead, to map out next year’s adventures, imagine warm spring mornings on the waterways, and maybe even drop a festive hint (or three) about the holiday you’d love in 2026.

Because even though Fox Narrowboats doesn’t offer winter cruising, there’s still a touch of Christmas magic to be found along the East Anglian waterways… and a boat hire holiday to look forward to when our season begins again in April.

Festive Magic at Wicken Fen

One of the loveliest winter destinations in our region is the National Trust’s Wicken Fen, which sparkles with seasonal activities this time of year, from nature trails and cosy café treats to family-friendly festive events.

And while you can’t cruise there right now, it’s fun to picture yourself moored at the GOBA moorings on Wicken Lode, ready to stretch your legs on a crisp morning. From the mooring, it’s just a short stroll to the Wicken Fen Visitor Centre and Café, where you can warm up with light refreshments and soak up the winter wildlife. Venture a little further into the village and you’ll find The Maid’s Head, a traditional 13^th century thatched pub, ready to offer hearty food and a comfortable seat by the fire. It’s the kind of simple winter pleasure that boaters love: nature, community, and an excuse for a hot drink you definitely earned by walking at least 200 metres.

We’re lucky to be within cruising distance of Ely; well known for its antique centres, ancient narrow streets, timbered houses and medieval gateways. This cruise is a four day short break at 4.5 hours cruising per day, or a relaxed one-week holiday, cruising only 2.5 hours per day.

Ely Cathedral always hosts a variety of Christmas services and events throughout November and December, including the annual Christmas Gift and Food Fair, carol services, and special concerts. But it’s stunning to visit at any time of year; highlights include tours of the medieval Octagon Tower, and a visit to the Stained Glass Museum.

If Santa can circumnavigate the globe in one night (with no stoppages, no mooring restrictions, and apparently no weed-hatch issues), it’s fair to say the man knows a good transport system when he sees one.

Some say he even pops over the Fens now and then during a test flight. The stillness of the winter waterways is perfect for fine-tuning reindeer-navigation, after all. And if he happened to glance down at March Marina and spot our fleet taking their winter rest… well, we imagine he’d approve.

Why Cats Make Great Ship-Mates

Cats are independent yet affectionate, and they can comfortably adjust to smaller living spaces, a perfect fit for narrowboat life. They also provide entertainment and emotional comfort, especially during those quiet evenings on-board.

Whenever I visit my friend, Lina, who lives aboard a narrowboat, we enjoy cosy nights of cats, candlelight, and wine. Many years ago, after one such evening, a small white cat followed me along the towpath as I left her boat. The following morning, she appeared again on the back deck at 6:30 a.m., politely insisting she be let in! Thirteen years and hundreds of miles of canal travel later, Molly is still a devoted boat cat. As I said to Lina, “Friends that boat together, stay together.” That could apply to Lina and me… or Lina and her cats.

First Days Onboard: Letting Them Adjust

A new cat should be kept indoors for at least 2–3 weeks (4–6 weeks is better) to allow them to familiarise themselves with the boat as their territory. This helps prevent them from wandering back to a previous home, and ensures they feel safe before exploring outside.

Creating Comfy “Lookout Spots”

Cats love to observe their surroundings. Space is limited on a narrowboat, but a cat will love any furnitre or fittings that will elevate them to be able to see out of the window. Some cats may prefer the dinette, kitchen worktop, or the roof! Whatever the choice, having high vantage points helps cats feel secure and engaged.

Boat Cats Fall In – Here’s Why It’s Okay

It’s a common worry for boaters: what happens if your cat takes an unexpected dip? Many confident cats misjudge a gunwale now and again. The good news is that cats are natural swimmers, and most climb out, shake off the embarrassment, and return to exploring as if nothing happened. Boat owners often note that their cats are far more upset about being towel-dried than the fall itself! Just offer warmth and reassurance, and watch for any signs of illness—a soggy moggy moment usually becomes just another charming chapter in life afloat.

Safety Tips for Cats on Canal Boats       

Microchip and ID: A collar with a phone number and your boat name is a good idea, in case your cat wanders too far.

Life Jackets: Many cats are fine without one, but nervous or adventurous felines may benefit from a cat-specific buoyancy aid like the Baltic Maja, with secure straps, a lifting handle, and high-visibility colours.

Indoor vs. Outdoor Boat Cats                    

Reboarding Solutions: Canal sides are steep. When working cargo boats were towed by horses, occasional underwater ramps were built in, to allow a horse to climb out, should they take an unexpected dip. A cat could climb out if you have a rope or cylindrical fenders at water level. Carpet tiles or hessian sacks draped over the side are good for claw grip. Some boaters keep a fisherman’s landing net for rescuing a soggy cat.

Outdoor cats may need careful monitoring. Some owners wait hours for their cat to return home, before setting off on a cruise, while others lock cats indoors at night for safety. Boat life allows their natural hunting instincts to thrive and exploring towpaths, hedgerows, and nearby fields keeps cats active and busy. Just remember that cruising schedules may need to adapt to a cat’s wanderings.

Some cats are happiest staying inside, especially those unaccustomed to roaming. Mental stimulation is crucial: scratching posts, cat grass, window hammocks, and interactive toys are lifesavers on wet or rainy days.

Practical Living Solutions for Boaters with Cats

Space may be limited, but there are ways to make life comfortable for both cat and owner:

Litter Tray: A bathroom or shower room works best.

Drying Station: Keep a towel handy beside the door for unexpected splashes.

That winter, with ice cracking around our ears as we slept, we found beauty in simplicity, strength in embracing limited resources, and thrived coming up with ingenious ways to get through, such as ferrying rubbish and waste on our young daughter’s sled down to the nearest towpath facilities station, or working together with neighbours to join up hosepipes so we could each connect to the nearest unfrozen tap. Community is something that always stands out whenever I talk to fellow boaters about life on the water and I can attest that there’s nothing like a harsh winter to bring out the best in people.

Nowadays though I’d like to think I’m a more seasoned winter boater, knowing how to get prepared well in advance for these colder days, how to keep the fire burning through the night, and also how to ensure my boat is safe, especially if it’s being left alone for a cold spell. For a start, you’ll find me stocked up with wood and smokeless coal before there’s even so much as a nip in the air so that when it’s time to bring the coal bucket out of summer storage from the front well-deck, I’m ready to go. Kindling and logs might also be gathered throughout the year and stored on the roof, but be aware that they will need to have dried for approximately one year before you burn them. Wet wood in a small boat does not create the kind of toasty, cosy atmosphere I like to go for in this season!

It’s also important to remember that the canal freezes so if you’re a continuous cruiser you’ll want to make sure you’re where you’re happy to be for a time—ideally close to a water point and facilities but also with the realisation that water points freeze too so start as you mean to go on with water conservation! I like to channel our industrial past and those bargees who worked historic boats through all conditions, often crammed into a boatman’s cabin with their entire family. You might not agree, but I think there is a romance to sink washes and basic meals cooked on the fire…and if you’re lucky enough to work from your boaty home it can feel like permission to switch off, hunker down and forget about the world ‘out there’.

On a practical level, make sure you’ve topped up your engine and heating system with antifreeze otherwise you might end up with a cylinder head cracking or a radiator pipe splitting. Also ensure you’ve paid some attention to any gaps in hatches, portholes and doorframes, and if you’re planning to leave your boat for a time but aren’t confident to winterise it yourself, you could ask a marina to carry out the draining of your water system and radiators and turning off of water pumps to avoid burst pipes and seals.

Whilst my 15 years on the water haven’t been without the odd hiccup, once settled into the rhythm and quirks of boat life you’ll find that winter—whilst sometimes a challenge—can be the thing that sets your life at the helm in stone…although I for one am hoping this winter won’t be quite as bracing as 2010!

This Halloween, we’re sharing some of the Fenland’s most spine-tingling legends. From haunted bridges to eerie echoes in the dark, discover why the waterways are the perfect place to enjoy a shiver down your spine, and why autumn is one of the best times to book a Fox Narrowboats holiday.

Haunted Hotspot: Lurking in Littleport

The most famous of Fenland phantoms is Black Shuck, the legendary hellhound said to have inspired The Hound of the Baskervilles. This ghostly black dog has been spotted more than once around Littleport, on the Great Ouse near Ely.

One story says the beast haunts the town after being slain while protecting a local girl from the clutches of a lustful friar. Another tale (tail?!) places the spectral dog along the A10, where its unfortunate owner drove his carriage into a bog in the 1800s, and drowned.

The legend gained eerie credibility in 2014, when archaeologists discovered the remains of a seven-foot dog in the grounds of Leiston Abbey, Suffolk. Locals immediately suspected the shallow grave belonged to Black Shuck himself. Experts suggested the animal could have weighed more than 14 stone in life.

Whether a dark omen or a supernatural protector, Black Shuck is still said to roam the Fens. On certain nights, if you dare to walk the local towpaths, you may hear his ghostly howls carried on the wind.

The Lantern Man

The Lantern Man is another chilling figure of Fenland folklore, often linked with Wicken Fen. This spectral light, known elsewhere as Will-o’-the-Wisp, drifts mysteriously across marshland. The phenomenon has been reported around the world, though scientists now suggest it may be caused by pockets of burning phosphorous gas.

Folklore paints a darker picture: the Lantern Man lures unwary travellers from the safety of the path into dangerous bogs and waters.

So, if you ever see a flickering glow on a misty night in the Fens… don’t follow the light! Head back to the comfort and safety of your narrowboat.

You can reach Wicken from the GOBA moorings on Wicken Lode. It’s only a short stroll to the National Trust Visitor Centre at Wicken Fen, where a café offers snacks and drinks. Wander a little further and you’ll come to the village and The Maid’s Head pub, a traditional 13th century thatched pub and restaurant. Wicken Fen is described by the National Trust, as its oldest nature reserve and England’s most famous fen.

A Famous Ghost: The Lord Protector

No catalogue of Fenland hauntings would be complete without Oliver Cromwell. The former Lord Protector of England is said to appear in his old bedroom at Ely, and his ghost has also been spotted at “Ghost Hill” near Murrow, a hamlet close to Wisbech.

Although Cromwell’s head is buried in the grounds of a Cambridge college, the final resting place of his body remains a mystery. Perhaps that is why his restless spirit still lingers in his old home. Oliver Cromwell’s house is now a museum and tourist information centre, and can be visited by narrowboat on the River Great Ouse. Every year the museum organises some events for the spooky season, such as Fen Tales in the Crypt, a guided tour of Witchcraft in Ely, and The Haunted Ely walking tour.
