All our boats are winterised and tucked up to sleep until spring-time, while we retreat indoors with mince pies and hot drinks.

But while our narrowboats are resting and the towpaths sparkle with morning frost, this season can be the perfect moment to dream ahead, to map out next year’s adventures, imagine warm spring mornings on the waterways, and maybe even drop a festive hint (or three) about the holiday you’d love in 2026.

Because even though Fox Narrowboats doesn’t offer winter cruising, there’s still a touch of Christmas magic to be found along the East Anglian waterways… and a boat hire holiday to look forward to when our season begins again in April.

Festive Magic at Wicken Fen

One of the loveliest winter destinations in our region is the National Trust’s Wicken Fen, which sparkles with seasonal activities this time of year, from nature trails and cosy café treats to family-friendly festive events.

And while you can’t cruise there right now, it’s fun to picture yourself moored at the GOBA moorings on Wicken Lode, ready to stretch your legs on a crisp morning. From the mooring, it’s just a short stroll to the Wicken Fen Visitor Centre and Café, where you can warm up with light refreshments and soak up the winter wildlife. Venture a little further into the village and you’ll find The Maid’s Head, a traditional 13^th century thatched pub, ready to offer hearty food and a comfortable seat by the fire. It’s the kind of simple winter pleasure that boaters love: nature, community, and an excuse for a hot drink you definitely earned by walking at least 200 metres.

A Cathedral at Christmas

We’re lucky to be within cruising distance of Ely; well known for its antique centres, ancient narrow streets, timbered houses and medieval gateways. This cruise is a four day short break at 4.5 hours cruising per day, or a relaxed one-week holiday, cruising only 2.5 hours per day.

Ely Cathedral always hosts a variety of Christmas services and events throughout November and December, including the annual Christmas Gift and Food Fair, carol services, and special concerts. But it’s stunning to visit at any time of year; highlights include tours of the medieval Octagon Tower, and a visit to the Stained Glass Museum.

Imagining a Christmas on the Water

If Santa can circumnavigate the globe in one night (with no stoppages, no mooring restrictions, and apparently no weed-hatch issues), it’s fair to say the man knows a good transport system when he sees one.

Some say he even pops over the Fens now and then during a test flight. The stillness of the winter waterways is perfect for fine-tuning reindeer-navigation, after all. And if he happened to glance down at March Marina and spot our fleet taking their winter rest… well, we imagine he’d approve.

We might not cruise in December, but the thought of future adventures makes winter feel warmer. The slow, thoughtful pace of canal boating pairs wonderfully with the cosy, reflective mood of the season. Christmas, in a way, is the boater’s natural habitat: hot drinks, twinkly lights, and a good excuse to plan next year’s routes with a notebook and a biscuit tin.

From flora and fauna, to ancient architecture, here are some ideas to help you savour the scenery and take home more than just memories from your holiday.

What Makes the Fens So Photogenic?

The Fenland waterways have a special kind of beauty. Think endless skies reflecting in still waters, sunrise mist over quiet fields, and flocks of birds skimming the reeds. The landscape is flat, which means big skies and long, golden sunsets. Plus, the ever-changing light creates a moody atmosphere that you’ll want to photograph.

Add to that the historic charm of riverside towns and villages, like Ely’s medieval cathedral or St Ives’ stunning chapel bridge, and you’ve got a pretty cool backdrop for every kind of shot.

Photography Tips From the Towpath

You don’t even need an expensive camera to get good photos these days. Most smartphones can capture something pretty decent, and you can always tweak things in an app later.

Golden Hour magic: Early mornings and late afternoons – known to photographers as the golden hour, offer soft, warm lighting that’s flattering for landscapes, and people.

Tell a story: Try capturing more than just the view. A candid photo of a family member making tea in the galley, or your dog watching ducks float by, make meaningful holiday memories. Get some pics of your crew operating a lock, or the skipper, steering the boat.

Snap with respect: The canals are home to colourful liveaboard boats, often beautifully painted. Feel free to photograph the boats, but avoid taking photos of people without asking first.

Keep it steady: On a moving boat, things can get a bit wobbly. Depending on the shot you want, you may need to moor up for a bit.

Use reflections: The calm surface of the waterways make brilliant mirrors. Look for moments when the water is still for stunning symmetrical shots.

Picture-Perfect Stops along the Way

There are some places along the Fenland waterways that are practically begging to be photographed. We like to think of them as the wonders of the waterways:

St Ives Chapel Bridge: One of the last remaining bridges with a chapel, it looks like something from a fairy tale, especially at sunset. The chapel is still used as a place of worship today.

Ely Cathedral: Towering above the town, the “Ship of the Fens” can be seen for miles. Moor nearby and take a stroll through the charming ancient streets, to find your perfect angle.

Cambridge’s Bridge of Sighs: This covered bridge with a romantic name and beautiful details wouldn’t look out of place in a Harry Potter movie. Best viewed from the water, so you may like to hire a punt; a small boat propelled by pushing a pole against the river bed.

The Middle Level Navigation: Remote, peaceful, and full of wildlife. Perfect for capturing that feeling of being far away from it all. Our marina is located on the Middle Level.

Capturing the Local Wildlife

Obviously, photographing animals requires some patience, but the Fens are full of good opportunities:

Look out for swans gliding past your boat, or herons lurking in the shallows. If you’re lucky, you might spot a kingfisher; a rare flash of blue darting over the water.

In the fields and skies, hares, kestrels, and owls all make appearances, especially if you’re travelling quietly.

Once you’re home, those photos will become some of your favourite souvenirs. Here are a few ways to enjoy them:

The Canals of the Fens: a History

Any decent guide of our east Anglian waterways should start with a brief history. Once a wetland landscape, the Fens were drained to create a flat, dry region for agriculture. The first attempts to drain the Fens began in Roman times, but the drainage was finally successful in the 1820s, when powerful coal-fired steam engines were brought in to replace the failing wind pumps. A great place to learn more about the history of these waterways is Stretham Old Drainage Engine, built in 1831. It can be visited when boating on the Great River Ouse, and is a great place to wander hand in hand, absorbing the history.

Also, Prickwillow Museum contains a nearly identical Mirrlees diesel engine that has been preserved and restored to working order.  This museum tells the story of the changing face of the Fens and its network of drainage systems and pumping stations. The museum is housed in the old pumping station in Prickwillow, just four miles east of the romantic, ancient, city of Ely.

Quirky photo opportunities may include wind farms, Ely Cathedral, or Cambridge’s Bridge of Sighs. Don’t hesitate to ask someone to take some spontaneous couples’ photos, of you two at the tiller, or sitting together in the bow. Last year on our blog we covered all of these topics, and we also enjoyed watching ‘Narrow Escapes’, learning the cost of living aboard, and we published a mini-guide to our must-see local attractions. Here are some of the best parts of 2024 on the Cambridgeshire waterways.

The third Monday in January is “Blue Monday”; the most depressing day of the year. But this was only created in 2005 by a travel firm, so the “science” is of dubious credibility! However, the media now use the idea of the January blues to promote self-care and mental health awareness. So, if you are feeling a little bit gloomy this month, we hope that daydreaming about narrowboating will cheer you up!

In 2024 we began offering skippered boat trips along the Middle Level waterways. Setting off from our marina in March, allow our qualified skipper to take the tiller, and point out the many interesting things that can only be seen from the river. Nav Data | March to St Ives Bridge: 52 miles, 6 locks, 15hrs cruising

As the days shorten and Autumn approaches, you may want to consider a 7 – 10 day cruise for the perfect escape.

You could choose to visit the Lodes and travel up to visit the stunning nature Reserve at Wicken Fen.

However, why not branch off from the main route, West onto the Great Ouse for a leisurely journey of 19 miles and with only two locks to negotiate, from Pope’s Corner to St. Ives.

From Pope’s Corner, bearing right towards Earith, you will find yourself joining a section of the Ouse known as the Old West River, a curious name for a river which flows eastwards.

On route, look out for Stretham Old Engine, a restored land drainage pumping station open to the public on certain days.

A great stop for refreshments is The Crown Pub in Earith.

Although mooring is currently not available here, you can take advantage of a 48 hour free public mooring on the frontage at nearby West View Marina.

St Ives

St Ives, (not to be confused with its Cornish counterpart), is famed for its 15th century chapel bridge, one of only four in England. St Ives has also historically been the home of some of the biggest markets in the country, with its Monday market still a central feature of the town centre.

St Ives Lock introduces two features, it is interesting to explore if you aren’t familiar with them.

Firstly, it is fitted with a guillotine bottom gate if you haven’t been on the Nene this could be your first self operated guillotine – now electric and operated by EA key which reduces the possibility of hand injuries. At the top there are conventional mitre gates. Secondly the lock chamber is an irregular shape, having been widened on one side for part of its length to increase the number of boats that can fit.

At busy times it’s common for a selection of cruisers, narrowboats other small craft and the odd widebeam to find themselves sharing the space.

St Ives’ most unusual historic building is a delight to see – the chapel that stands on the middle of the partly Mediaeval town bridge. There are just four bridges in the country that share this feature (the others being at Bradford-on-Avon, Rotherham and Wakefield), with st Ives being the only one you can cruise through. The building has also at other times been a doctor’s surgery, a toll-house, an inn and even a brothel.

But there’s much more to St Ives, with its attractive riverfront, intriguing museum, historic parish church (which had the misfortune to lose its spire to a direct impact from a WW1 aeroplane in 1918) and useful shops, pubs and restaurants. The Norris Museum is a small but fascinating free museum unveils the story of Huntingdonshire from ancient times onwards, covering social history, personalities, wartime experiences, archaeology, science and technology, art, costume and transport. A great place to linger although if you’ve made good time, you can always consider cruising on a further 11 miles to Huntingdon.

So here are our top three tips for enjoying the winter months

1) Exercise

We all know that exercise can help to boost our mental health, so if you live near to a canal, running, walking or cycling on the towpath can offer a workout in the sunlight. Being close to nature can also lift your mood; not just the water and plants, but the busy ducks, swans, moorhens and geese can cheer you up. When you’re on a narrowboat holiday interesting exercise options are included, such as, operating the locks, walking between the locks, and pulling ropes and hammering pegs when mooring the boat up.

2) Festivities

There are some happy occasions to look forward to in the winter. Halloween offers themed events, or paranormal investigations. This year Oliver Cromwell’s House offers some walking tours themed around ghosts and witches.

This offers special events and house tours throughout the year, and you can visit by boat when travelling on the River Great Ouse. Ely is claimed to be one of England’s spookiest cities. (Read more in The Spooky Truth About Cruising to Ely.) The strange and compelling landscape of the Fens, with their huge skyscapes, reclaimed marshlands and scattered and isolated villages can be very eerie at this time of year. Peterborough Museum, claims to have eight resident ghosts. They include a First World War soldier and a ghostly kitchen maid. This museum can also be visited by boat if you are taking the March to Peterborough cruise. This 12 hour return trip is ideal for a short break.

It wouldn’t be winter in England without Christmas, including festive markets and a trip to church. The ancient architecture, candlelight, holly and ivy, and special services such as carols, advent, christingles and nativities can brighten up a dark day.
